Our history
Paddling Anglers in Canoes and Kayaks (PACK) was founded in March 1998 by about ten enthusiasts who wanted to share the excitement of Gulf Coast fishing from small boats. We have met every month since: first at Pecos Jack's Wilderness Furnishings in Sugar Land, from 2001 to 2004 at the Red Cross building on Hwy 59 South in Houston, from January 2005 at the REI store on Westheimer Road, and after about four years at REI, at the Trini Mendenhall Sosa Community Center, 1414 Wirt Road.
PACK has grown a lot over the years, but its purpose hasn't changed: friendship and fun, safe and legal fishing from kayaks and canoes, and responsible use of our marine resources. In April 2001, together with TexasKayakFisherman.com, we sponsored what was then the largest canoe and kayak fishing tournament and BBQ on the Gulf Coast, with over 65 anglers and more than 85 people in all. We still organize many fishing trips, including weekends at Matagorda Island and Goose Island State Parks, Panther Point and Padre Island National Seashore, and plan new paddling and fishing adventures all year (see Events and Photos).
Most of our members fish in saltwater, since Houston is close to the bays and the Gulf of America, and for variety we also explore the lakes and rivers of Texas. Kayaks have become the boat of choice because they handle the frequent coastal winds better. Our meetings have speakers on fishing and boating topics and social events such as crawfish boils and fish fries, but the main event is still planning outings and swapping stories over a cold drink. There's no better place to learn about kayak fishing on the Texas Gulf Coast.
