Description:

Fayette County Lake
Just west of Fayetteville, TX
February 26-28, 2010

Trip Description:

Week end camp out. Depending on the weather/wind. This location is also within easy driving distance for a day trip for those not interested in the whole weekend. There are screened shelters, cabins, primitive and rv camp sites available. Contact TX Parks Reservations at 512-389-8900 for availability. The good spots and cabins do go fast. This is a very good camp ground, very clean and well run, and this is a popular time of year for the bass fishermen. There are fire rings, bar b que pits, and picnic tables at all the cabins and camp sites.

Fishing Tips and Techniques:

Since this is the cooling lake for a power plant, water temperatures will always be warmer than natural lakes and reservoirs. Strategies need to be adjusted accordingly. The full moon in February usually signals the peak of the spawn on this lake. Females will be on nests in shallow water and aggressive males will be guarding the area. Lizards or tube baits in chartreuse, brown or white will get reaction strikes from females and when they do, hold on, it could be a giant. Please treat these ladies with care, photo and release is appreciated by these spawners. The smaller males will hit spinner baits, ½ oz tandem blades in chartreuse or chartreuse/white are highly recommended. On sunny days, clear days throw gold rattletraps. On cloudy days, red is the color. Watermelon worms, or any red/green combination seem to work on the edges of the grass and points. Carolina rigs, wacky worms, jig and pig, all work well. Even a good ole Bass assassin for us salt water types and don’t forget your topwaters early and late.

Fishing Options:

Good lake for black bass, crappie, catfish, and sunfish. This is a slot limit lake. Please check TPWD guidelines for specific limits. The Game Warden lives here, don’t even think about trying to keep a fish that’s inside the slot. If its on a stringer, the warden will consider it in possession. This lake primarily becomes catch and release for black bass. Catfish, crappie, sunfish, etc are no problem, just know the rules for this lake. I repeat, the Game Warden will check you as you leave the water, will check you on the water, and will write you up here. Please observe all rules or it will cost you.

  •  Launch at Park Prairrie or Oak Thicket Park launches.
  • Fish the grass –run spinner baits or shallow running crankbaits just over the tops of submerged grass. Often, just ticking the grass will trigger strikes. Red or Gold rattletraps are favorites
  • Other areas- The main lake points are typical bass habitat as are submerged road beds and tank dams. Find humps and other structure for suspended fish. If the wind allows to fish these deeper areas, worms and jigs are effective. Find 8-10 foot depths and run crankbaits.
  • The females will be on nests, often sight casting opportunities will be available. Though hard to catch, these fish can be exciting to land if you can make her mad enough to strike.
